For many women, taking hormone replacement therapy lessens the risk of heart disease. But for others, it increases the risk of breast cancer and, thus, shortens life. A Woman Doctor's Guide to Hormone Therapy, based on research by Nananda Francette Col and her colleagues at the New England Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine, can tell you definitively whether you're one of the women who would be helped by hormone replacement, or if it's too risky for you. From Library Journal Drawing on a landmark study published this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Col provides an overview of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), its use in menopause, and subsequent risk factors for developing breast cancer, osteoporosis, and coronary heart disease. (The study, in which the author participated, concluded that HRT would lengthen the lives of most women.) Calculating her risk/benefit regarding these conditions by using a computer model converted from the study, a woman can estimate future chances as well as life expectancy. One chapter demystifies the computer model for lay readers, although the numerous tables in the text might intimidate some. Col also discusses lifestyle changes, dosage options, and length of HRT treatment time. Helpful appendixes from the American Cancer Society, a suggested reading list, and Internet sites make this an appropriate book for consumer health collections. However, Dr. Susan Love's Hormone Book (LJ 3/1/97) provides a broader and more comprehensive scope.?Janet Coggan, Univ. of Florida Libs., Gainesville Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.
